El Camino Hospital Sleep Lab in Los Gatos Receives American Academy of Sleep Medicine Accreditation

Los Gatos, CA, June 4, 2015 – The El Camino Hospital Sleep Lab in Los Gatos announced today it recently received accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). The accreditation demonstrates El Camino Hospital’s commitment to quality diagnostic services and long-term management of patients with sleep disorders.

"The American Academy of Sleep Medicine congratulates El Camino Hospital Sleep Lab on meeting the high standards required for receiving accreditation as a sleep disorders center,” said Dr. Timothy Morgenthaler, AASM president. “El Camino Hospital’s Sleep Lab is an important resource to the local medical community and will provide academic and scientific value in addition to the highest quality care for sleep patients suffering from sleep disorders."

To receive accreditation for a five-year period, a sleep lab must meet or exceed all standards for professional health care as designated by the AASM. These standards address core areas such as personnel, facility and equipment, policies and procedures, data acquisition, patient care, and quality assurance. Additionally, the sleep lab’s goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves.

According to the AASM, about 70 million Americans suffer from a sleep problem; among them, nearly 60 percent have a chronic disorder such as obstructive sleep apnea or insomnia. To address this growing health need, El Camino Hospital Los Gatos started the Sleep Disorders Program in 2012 and has treated more than 475 people with a sleep disorder. The program’s expert specialists treat patients with all types of sleep disorders, including obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, parasomnia, and restless leg syndrome.

“El Camino Hospital Los Gatos’ Sleep Disorders Program specialists focus exclusively on treating sleep disorders and have a subspecialty training for sleep which allows us to offer a wide range of customized treatment options for our patients ,” said Tony Masri, MD, medical director of El Camino Hospital Los Gatos Sleep Disorder Program.

On Saturday, June 20, at 10 am, Dr. Masri will present a “Sleep and Wellness” lecture and share the latest innovations in sleep care at El Camino Hospital’s Men’s Health Fair in Los Gatos. Obstructive sleep apnea, one of the most common sleep disorders, is more common in men than women, affecting up to 24% of men. In addition to sleep disorders, physician specialists will be providing health information specifically for men related to cardiology, orthopedics, urology and more.

The El Camino Hospital Sleep Lab is located at 815 Pollard Road in Los Gatos, California. For more information about the program, visit www.elcaminohospital.org/sleep.
