Partner Spotlight: Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative

The Bay Area Women’s Sports initiative works to inspire girls to take part in sports, and provides adaptive sports for students with disabilities.

Learning to enjoy physical activity at a young age can be life changing, leading to benefits and healthy habits that can last into adulthood. The Bay Area Women’s Sports Initiative (BAWSI) — a fiscal year 2025 Community Benefit partner — works in area schools, offering school and after-school programs to encourage students facing challenges to take part in organized sports and other physical activities.

Community Benefit funding is helping BAWSI serve Rosemary Elementary School. BAWSI Girls, for girls in grades 2 through 5, draws leaders from the women’s sports community to inspire girls from under-resourced communities. The program encourages participants to get moving, set high expectations for themselves, and improve their beliefs, attitudes and behaviors related to leadership and physical activity.

Early access to sports for kids facing socioeconomic, physical or other challenges could benefit mental and physical health now and into the future. An active lifestyle can also help prevent many chronic health problems, such as obesity and diabetes (identified as a critical need in the Fiscal Year 2025 Implementation Strategy Report and Community Benefit Plan).
