Valley Verde is helping families in San Jose grow organic produce and improve their nutrition through the Shared Garden and Deep Roots programs.

Fresh, organically grown fruit and vegetables can be expensive and out of reach for low-income families. Community Benefit partner Valley Verde is helping families in San Jose grow and share their own organic produce to improve their nutrition and health cost-effectively.

Fiscal year 2025 is the sixth year of our partnership with Valley Verde, helping them provide:

  • Monthly workshops on nutrition, healthy cooking and organic gardening techniques
  • Garden builds providing infrastructure for new organic vegetable gardens in the homes of low-income families
  • Quarterly visits from Valley Verde staff to provide tailored advice, troubleshooting and encouragement
  • Gardening supplies and seedlings, grown by Valley Verde and focusing on culturally preferred varieties, to plant in their gardens
  • Super Jardineros Trainings: For two years, apprentices participate in monthly workshops and one-on-one mentorship, to learn to grow professional-quality seedlings for Shared Garden and Deep Roots program use.

Growing healthy food at home helps fight diabetes and obesity, a critical need highlighted in the Implementation Strategy Report and Community Benefit Plan.
