Partner Spotlight: African American Community Services Agency

Serving Communities of Color in Downtown San Jose

Since 1978, African American Community Services Agency (AACSA) has been serving and advocating for all communities of color in downtown San Jose. Focusing on the under-served African American population, AACSA helps fight the impact of racial disparities by providing a safe, welcoming environment, as well as educational, cultural, social and recreational programs and services.

AACSA provides the Family Health Services program to support low-income, disenfranchised, ethnically diverse children and parents through outreach, screenings and classes on nutrition, fitness and parenting skills. Services include:

  • Behavioral and child development screening
  • Organizing community health screenings
  • Linking families with community services and programs
  • Workshops on healthy living
  • Nutritious soul food cooking classes
  • Exercise classes

By offering easy access to these resources, AACSA is helping reduce the burden of diabetes and obesity — identified as a top health need in our 2022 Community Health Needs Assessment. Incidence of Type 2 diabetes in the community is rising, and nationwide, African Americans are at higher risk. A healthier lifestyle can help prevent diabetes or slow the development of complications.
