Sunnyvale, CA - June 9, 2011 - Dr. Ellen Brown, medical director at Pathways Home Health & Hospice, received the 2011 Physician of the Year Award from the California Association for Health Services at Home (CAHSAH). The Physician of the Year Award honors physicians in California who excel in providing patient care in the home including palliative and hospice care.
Dr. Brown has been a medical director at Pathways since 1996. She holds two board certifications, one in Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine and the other in Internal Medicine. In addition to her patient care, Brown works with medical students, residents and fellows having developed a home hospice rotation educating them on end of life issues. Prior to joining Pathways, she was on the clinical faculty of Stanford and the Stanford Medical Group.
"At Pathways, Dr. Brown is the common thread between hospice, pediatrics, home health, and palliative care," said Georgia Rock, Chief Operating Officer, Pathways Home Health & Hospice. "For almost 15 years, Dr. Brown has dedicated herself to our patients and families. She makes home visits with nurses, speaks with primary physicians about complicated situations and offers recommendations for optimal treatment. She is unfailing in her commitment in providing excellent care for our patients young and old."
When asked what she likes best about being a home health, palliative care and hospice medical director, Dr. Brown said "My favorite part of the job is the house call. I get to spend time with our patients and their families with the aim of making people more comfortable. I am able to find out what is important to them at the end of life and help them achieve these goals."
"As a Pathways physician, I see things that are joyful as well as heart-wrenching," Brown continued. "I feel it is a privilege to be present during these inspiring and intimate moments. My patients are incredible individuals who welcome me into their homes and are as diverse as you would expect in the Bay Area. Their ages range from newborn to 100 years old and they are of every ethnicity and income level."
