It's the time of year for costumes, sweets, and tricks and treats. Halloween is fun for kids of all ages – and adults too! Kick-off the holiday season by putting safety first with these common-sense tips.
- Choose safe props. Try to avoid costumes that have weapons as accessories, but if your child's costume won't be complete without that pirate's sword, make sure it's short, soft, and flexible.
- Keep decorations safe. Dark and spooky is a recipe for tripping and other accidents. Keep a few lights on to ensure your safety as you dispense the treats, and make sure the pathway to your door is clear of obstacles for eager little goblins.
- Be cautious with face paint. Much of it isn't FDA-approved and could trigger allergic reactions. Always test it first on a small patch of skin and remove it before bedtime to avoid skin/eye irritation.
- Serve a filling meal before heading out. Prevent your kids from overloading on candy by providing a healthy dinner prior to trick or treating.
- Stay visible. Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors.
- When in doubt, throw it out. Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them.
- Keep Halloween safe for all your little monsters. As much as your pets may beg for candy or treats, remember that chocolate can be deadly to our furry friends.
With all the excitement of Halloween preparations and celebrations, it's easy to forget about basic precautions. But by following these simple safety tips, you'll be ready for a safe and spooktacular evening!
