This winter, while other states are in the midst of blizzards or trapped inside by heavy winds, we have the opportunity to go out and about with our families and have some fun. Have you ever taken a day to play tourist? Here’s a list of Bay Area gems that are fun for all ages.
Sonic Runway – Downtown San Jose
Located outside of San Jose’s City Hall along Santa Clara Street from Fourth to Sixth streets, a public art piece called Sonic Runway made its debut in November, and was just extended to March 8, 2017. The installation, which encourages visitors to walk through the display of changing, converts audio signals into a pattern of colorful lights that appear to travel down the street at the speed of sound.
Children’s Discovery Museum – Downtown San Jose
The distinct 52,000 sq. ft. purple building, located on Woz Way in Downtown San Jose serves the needs of children, families and schools as a center for learning and discovery. The Museum welcomes guests of all ages and includes a regular selection of exhibits including outdoor play, water play, bubbles, theatre and more.
Tech Museum, Downtown San Jose
The Tech Museum of Innovation is a family-friendly interactive science and technology center located in downtown San Jose, California. It has become a landmark for visitors seeking a glimpse of the most inventive place on Earth — Silicon Valley. With a variety of exhibits, there is something for everyone.
San Francisco Bay Trail – Various locations
The San Francisco Bay Trail is a planned 500-mile walking and cycling path around the entire San Francisco Bay spanning all nine Bay Area counties, 47 cities and across seven toll bridges. In addition to walkers and cyclists, the trail is used by joggers, skaters, birdwatchers, photographers, kite-flyers, wheelchair riders, picnickers, and more.
Winter Lodge – Palo Alto
A family tradition since 1956, The Winter Lodge offers outdoor ice skating, tennis, a public picnic space and fun activities in the clubhouse.
Winchester Mystery House – San Jose
Since 1923 the story of Sarah Winchester and her incredibly peculiar house has fascinated more than 12 million people from around the world who have toured its lonely hallways, dark passages and ornate rooms. The Explore More tour, the first all-new tour to be offered at Winchester Mystery House in more than 20 years, takes guests to areas of the house never-before open to the public or which have been off limits for decades.
Exploratorium – San Francisco
Located in San Francisco, the Exploratorium is a public learning laboratory exploring the world through science, art, and human perception. The museum offers tools and experiences to help visitors become active explorers with explore-for-yourself exhibits, hands on learning, and more.
